The Internship is a 12-month fixed-term contract with an R5000 monthly stipend. This is an opportunity to collaborate with dynamic creatives at the famous and internationally known Market Theatre Foundation, which has a long history of contributing to South Africa’s Arts & Culture sector.

The learning experience comprises on-the-job training that provides a wide range of skills and valuable professional experience.

Internship in Digital Communications

The incumbent will be a member of the Market Theatre Foundation’s overall Brand & Communications team. The Intern will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of digital channels such as database and social media campaigns that generate new consumer leads, promote the brand and its goods, and contribute to overall company growth.

Requirements:

  • A suitable degree or diploma in Marketing, Brand Communications, or Media Studies
  • Fundamental understanding of campaign management, from conception to execution
  • Understanding of the nature and role of the theater and entertainment industries.
  • Practical knowledge in social media monitoring
  • Understanding of social media traffic, impressions, target and audience
  • Understanding of web marketing

Internship as a Graphic Designer

The incumbent will be a member of the Market Theatre Foundation’s overall Brand & Communications team. The incumbent will collaborate closely with the MTF team to create graphic marketing material for all MTF departments, as well as visual material for marketing and branding objectives. This includes, but is not limited to, the creation of posters, flyers, banners, digital media (social media, websites, and other visual online assets), yearly reports, booklets, merchandising, and other similar items.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in fine/visual arts, communications, media, or a related subject
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with MAC OS, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of copyright and licensing of visual materials.
  • Knowledge of social media and other online platforms

Internship in Audience Development

The Audience Development intern will work to improve the relationship between an individual and the arts by changing the individual’s behavior. They accomplish this by breaking down barriers, teaching stakeholders about the art form, and thereby broadening audiences for the arts in general, or bringing first-time visitors to the theatre specifically, with the primary goal of putting bums on seats, which leads to an increase in revenue. Arrange meetings with potential clients on and off site in order to pique their interest and fill seats. Seeking and obtaining referrals in order to expand the Audience Development database and disseminate information that will result in prospective bums on seats for our shows/productions. Attending any show, answering tickets questions from stakeholders/patrons.

Requirements:

  • A national diploma or a degree in marketing, sales, or stakeholder relations.
  • Additional related qualifications, such as sales and marketing, would be desirable.

Intern Stage Manager

Description: The successful incumbent will help stage managers in ensuring that each assigned production is stage managed efficiently and effectively in accordance with the Stage Managers manual. Ensure efficient and effective management of stakeholder communication channels, and act in the best interests of the organization.

Requirements:

  • Performing Arts Degree/Diploma or related Theatre Qualifications
  • The ability to manage and motivate a group of individuals in a high-stress atmosphere.
  • Capable of working under duress

Internship as a Sound Technician

The incumbent will be a part of the Market Theatre’s professional technical production team and will be involved in the sound staging of Market Theatre productions. The applicant will be assisting Market Theatre’s sound technician with event, production, and outside event set ups. The applicant must have technical knowledge in sound engineering, sound set up, patching, and mixing. Using a mixing console to program cues for presentations or events. For shows and events, operate analogue or digital mixing consoles.

Requirements:

  • A degree or diploma in sound technology/engineering or performing arts is required.
  • This role is ideal for a recent sound engineering graduate or someone with prior sound expertise.

Internship in Lighting

The successful incumbent will be a member of the Technical department team, assisting in the hanging of lights, focusing, programming, repairing, troubleshooting any difficulties that may emerge, and operating lights for all events/shows and conferences at the Market Theatre Foundation. Operating lighting desks and cues during technical get-ins and performances, as well as operating effects equipment in accordance with SM cues. Light charts, cue sheets, and other technical materials must be read and interpreted. Assist with the loading and unloading of lighting in the theatre venue. Applying lighting technical knowledge to meet the artistic goals set.When necessary, repair or replace light bulbs or tubes in light fixtures, or replace the entire light fixture.

Requirements:

  • National Diploma/Degree in Lighting Design or Theatre Production

Internship as an IT Technician

Description: As needed, the successful applicant will assist in delivering onsite and remote assistance. Responsible for hardware setup, maintenance, and installation. Creating and sustaining efficient technological processes to achieve internal and external satisfaction.

Requirements:

  • Matriculation / Grade 12
  • Diploma in Information Technology
  • A+ N+ Qualification completed
  • Basic understanding of computer hardware and software
  • Knowledge of common operating systems (for example, Windows 10, 11 | Server 2016,2019 | macOS)
  • Fundamental knowledge of networking ideas and protocols
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

Internship in Administration

Description: General front office management and reception services, including greeting visitors and handling phone and in-person inquiries. Provide general public, clients, and customers with information about the organization. Filing, record management, and administrative duties are all performed.

Requirements:

  • Office Administration Diploma or equivalent Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures
  • Understanding of computers and essential software applications
  • Understanding of customer service ideas and methods.

Internship in the Media

The incumbent will participate in the Market Theatre Foundation’s Market Photo Workshop. The incumbent will be in charge of consolidating material for publications, brochures, postcards, newsletters, and so on, while maintaining high standards. They will be expected to design media items in accordance with the MPW corporate identity, using templates given as appropriate. Together with relevant management, they will also conceptualize and implement publicity and marketing strategies for all Photo Workshop courses, initiatives, and programs in order to maximize public consumption and involvement.

Requirements:

  • Relevant experience – in media or marketing
  • Fundamental understanding of campaign management, from conception to execution
  • Understanding of the nature and role of the theatre and entertainment industries, as well as photography and the visual culture environment.
  • Practical knowledge in social media monitoring
  • Understanding of social media traffic, impressions, target and audience

Internship as a Library Assistant

Library assistants are in charge of sorting and shelving books based on their category, as well as aiding clients with internet access and ensuring their technical needs are addressed. Among other things, they handle inquiries over the counter, via email, or via phone. Assisting students and coworkers in finding literature. At the front desk, I check books in and out. Sorting and arranging books based on their classification. Keeping track of which books are borrowed and which are returned. Keeping track of fresh arrivals. To assist the Programs Officer in managing and running the Literacy and Homework Support Program, which is funded by the SEF Internship Program. To help in the creation of public programming related to reading rooms.

Requirements:

  • Library Information Studies or a related field

Internship in Research and Archiving

The incumbent will assist in the coordination of archival and research activities for the Market Photo Workshop. This position supports public programming as well as the administrative and project management capacities of projects and courses, exhibitions, research, and the Photo Workshop collection.

Requirements:

  • A tertiary qualification in the humanities is required. (Qualifications in photography, visual arts, and heritage archives are preferred)
  • Computer proficiency (Mac and PC, Excel and Word, E-mail)
  • Be driven and enthusiastic about photography and the value of archives to South Africa’s future.
  • Work well under pressure, unsupervised, and with initiative.
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the nature and role of photography, archives in general, and the landscape of education and development for African practitioners.

Internship in Supply Chain Management

The successful candidate will be responsible for particular administrative activities related to the procurement of goods and services within the department in accordance with the city government’s procurement laws and practices. Obtain quotations in accordance with the procurement policy standards. Allow project managers to review answers and conclude the selection of service providers by facilitating the gathering and return of quotations. Maintain control documents, business procedures, and processes related to supplier needs and applications.

Requirements:

  • A national diploma or degree in Supply Chain/Logistics Management

Internship as a Technical Assistant

The chosen applicant will contribute to the development and maintenance of effective technical processes to ensure internal and external satisfaction. Capability to lead and motivate a group of people in a high-stress scenario. Maintains all department equipment and ensures it is in excellent working order and conforms to all maintenance and servicing protocols. Using a mixing console to program cues for presentations or events

Requirements:

  • Performing Arts Degree/Diploma or equivalent Theatre qualifications
  • Sound/lighting knowledge

Internship in Production Administration

The incumbent will work in the Producer’s office and obtain extensive understanding of the administrative aspects of professional theatrical performances. Assist the Production Department with the creation and upkeep of schedules.

Requirements:

  • A degree/diploma in office administration or a relevant arts certification is required.
  • Applicants will assist the Producer and Assistant Producer with quotation and contract administration.
  • Computer savvy
  • Fundamental financial, communication, and project management abilities

Internship in Maintenance

The successful candidate will assist Handyman in conducting different maintenance jobs throughout the day.

Requirements:

  • A qualification in building and construction or something related
  • Computer literacy (specifically, Excel)
  • Project Administration
  • Knowledge of hardware tools and electrical equipment
  • Basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, or HVAC systems
  • Basic math abilities
  • Effective communication abilities
  • Previous experience in health and safety will be desirable.
