As part of this commitment, we are seeking a Data Protection Officer (DPO) to ensure compliance with data protection laws and foster a culture of privacy across the organization. This role reports directly to the Chief Operations Officer.


Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

-Monitor compliance with Botswana’s Data Protection Act and relevant regulations.

-Conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) to identify and mitigate data privacy risks.

-Maintain a data processing register and document processing activities.

-Develop and manage the organization’s data protection framework.

-Establish robust internal controls to ensure compliance with laws and best practices.

-Advise management and staff on data protection obligations.

-Collaborate with IT, Legal, and operational teams to align data practices with regulations.

-Draft and implement data protection policies and procedures.

-Review operational contracts for data protection compliance.

-Deliver training programs to educate employees on privacy practices.

-Investigate and report data breaches to relevant authorities.

-Act as the primary liaison for data protection authorities and regulatory bodies.

-Manage data subject access requests and customer inquiries about personal data.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law, Information Technology, Business Administration, or related fields.
  • Certification in Data Protection or Privacy (e.g., CIPP, CIPM, CIPT) is an added advantage.

Experience

  • At least 5 years of experience in legal, compliance, or data protection roles.
  • Expertise in data protection laws, particularly Botswana’s Data Protection Act.
  • Experience managing cross-functional teams and data privacy initiatives.

Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of data protection principles and best practices.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Integrity and discretion in handling sensitive information.
  • Proficiency in drafting policies, reports, and documentation.
