We are offering an exciting opportunity for an Entry-Level Loco Driver at our Kumba Iron Ore operation in Kathu, South Africa. The primary responsibility of this role is to safely transport mining equipment, components, and spares by rail to various destinations within the required timeframe.
Responsibilities
–Health and Safety Compliance: Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental practices. Ensure that the work area remains clean, visible safety signs are in place, and report any material spillages to prevent contamination and pollution.
–Operational Duties: Safely operate and control rail equipment, ensuring compliance with loco regulatory authority manuals and dispatch schedules. This includes shunting, positioning for loading and off-loading, and weighing trucks and tanks to ensure accurate freight transportation.
–Safety Participation: Actively participate in SLAM, HPH, Risk Assessments, and close out Safety Actions.
–Pre-shift Equipment Inspection: Conduct pre-shift inspections to ensure all required equipment is functional and safe, preventing potential damage, injury, and financial loss.
–Communication: Effectively communicate with team members to ensure safe and efficient loading and off-loading of equipment, especially during heavy freight operations.
–Assistance: Provide assistance to supervisors and co-workers as needed to ensure the successful completion of tasks and adherence to company policies.
Requirements
- Educational Qualifications:
- Grade 12/N3.
- Qualification in Open Line Working.
- Licensing and Certification:
- Driver’s Licence: Code EC1 (Heavy Vehicle).
- Diesel Certificate 34GE and 34GM class with Unit Standards according to SAQA standards.
- Competency Certificate in Pneumatic pressure and Vacuum brake systems.
- Technical Skills and Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year of practical experience in rail transport operations.
- Proficiency in footplate operations.
- Comprehensive understanding of locomotive components and functionality.
- Proficient in locomotive driving and shunting principles.
- Familiarity with radio equipment usage and procedures.
- In-depth knowledge of railway dispatch standards, systems, and regulations.
- Thorough understanding and compliance with company policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of control room software such as SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.
