Milky Dombolo (Steamed Bread) Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • 1 cup grated carrots
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp instant yeast

Instructions:

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Whisk together until well mixed.
  2. Add the melted butter and mix using your hands until incorporated.
  3. Stir in the grated carrots, ensuring they are evenly distributed.
  4. Gradually add the milk, mixing to form a dough. Continue kneading until the dough is smooth and no longer sticky.
  5. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  6. Once risen, punch down the dough to release the gas.
  7. Prepare your steaming cups or casserole dish by greasing the insides with butter or cooking oil.
  8. Fill the cups or dish halfway with the dough.
  9. In a large pot, add cold water and place the filled cups or dish inside. Cover with a lid.
  10. Steam the dombolo for 30 to 40 minutes. Check for doneness by inserting a long skewer; if it comes out dry, the bread is cooked.
  11. Remove from heat and allow the steamed bread to cool slightly. Gently tap the bottom of the cups or dish to release the bread.
  12. Slice and serve with your favorite stew or salad.
