Reserve Police Service Opportunities: Join Us as a Reservist!

Overview:
A reservist is an individual appointed by the National Commissioner to serve voluntarily in the Reserve Police Service, supporting the Police in various capacities. We are currently seeking dedicated individuals to contribute to community safety and policing efforts.

Categories of Reservists:

  1. Category 1 Reservist: Functional Policing
  • Performs general policing functions at station level or in specialized units.
  • Duties include deployment in sectors, working in the Community Safety Centre, and wearing a uniform post-training.
  • Supervised by a permanent member or experienced reservist.
  • Required training in relevant aspects of functional policing.
  1. Category 2 Reservist: Specialized Operational Support
  • Individuals with specific skills or expertise for operational use by the SAPS.
  • Performs specialized functions in their field of expertise.
  • May wear a uniform with commander approval.
  • Training in relevant legal aspects, policies, and instructions applicable to specific functions.

Recruitment for Appointment:

  • Recruitment is based on SAPS operational needs and priorities, emphasizing the acquisition of specialized skills.
  • Former SAPS members are encouraged to join as reservists to share their knowledge and experience.
  • Reservist services are voluntary, without remuneration, and do not guarantee permanent SAPS positions.

Requirements for Appointment:
Candidates must meet basic enlistment requirements, including being a South African citizen, age between 25 and 40, good character, educational qualifications, language proficiency, and more.

Non-Appointments Under Certain Circumstances:
Individuals discharged as medically unfit, rejected re-enlistment, political affiliations, involvement in specific industries, criminal records, and other criteria are ineligible.

Appointment under Specific Circumstances:
Certain individuals, like Community Police Forum members, Transnet employees, Correctional Services members, and others, may be appointed under specific conditions.

Re-enlistment of Reservists:
Former reservists may be re-enlisted, subject to meeting requirements and agreeing to a refresher course if inactive for more than two years.

Uniform, Insignia, and Ranks:
Reservists wear the same uniform as permanent members but are identified with specific insignia. Reservists will not be appointed with ranks, and existing reservists retain their ranks until resignation or termination.

Training and Skills Development:
Reservists undergo training as determined by the National Commissioner, including in-service training for key competencies. Distance learning and practical sessions are part of the training program.

Conditions of Enlistment:
Compensation for loss of income due to duty-related illnesses or injuries, death grant for spouses of deceased reservists, and funeral cost coverage are provided under specific conditions.

Medals and Awards:
Certificates for meritorious services may be awarded to reservists in recognition of exceptional contributions.
