Position Overview
Orange Botswana is looking for a qualified and experienced Data Protection Officer (DPO) to lead the implementation of the company’s data protection strategy in line with the Botswana Data Protection Act of 2024 and other international privacy standards. The DPO will act as the main point of contact for all data protection-related matters, including interactions with supervisory authorities, data subjects, and internal teams.
Key Responsibilities
Data Protection Compliance
- Develop and maintain internal data protection policies and ensure compliance with data protection regulations.
- Conduct staff training and awareness campaigns on privacy and data protection best practices.
- Monitor ongoing compliance with data privacy laws and internal controls.
Risk Management and Auditing
- Conduct regular internal audits and assessments to identify data protection risks.
- Lead Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and recommend risk mitigation strategies.
- Work closely with the risk management team to ensure secure and compliant handling of personal data.
Data Subject Rights and Requests
- Serve as the main point of contact for data subjects requesting access, correction, or deletion of personal data.
- Ensure timely and compliant responses to all personal data requests.
Data Breach Management
- Develop and maintain an incident response plan for managing data breaches.
- Lead investigations into data breaches and ensure timely reporting to authorities and affected individuals, as required by law.
Advisory Role
- Provide expert guidance to management and teams on data privacy during contract reviews, third-party engagements, and new product development.
- Advise on legal and regulatory obligations related to personal data processing.
Liaison with Supervisory Authorities
- Act as Orange Botswana’s official contact point with the Data Protection Authority.
- Coordinate responses to data protection authority inquiries and ensure appropriate record-keeping and documentation.
Required Skills and Attributes
- In-depth knowledge of data protection laws and best practices, including GDPR.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to clearly communicate complex privacy topics to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong ethical standards with a commitment to confidentiality, transparency, and integrity.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Law, Information Security, Compliance, Business Administration, or related field
- Master’s degree is an added advantage
- Professional certifications in Data Protection, Compliance, or Privacy (e.g., CIPP/E, CIPM) are highly desirable
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in data protection, privacy, or compliance roles
- Membership of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) is preferred
- Demonstrated experience working with data protection laws and global privacy frameworks
