Republic of Cuba Undergraduate Medical Scholarships – Academic Year 2025/2026

Overview

The Ministry of Higher Education invites qualified Botswana citizens to apply for two (2) undergraduate scholarships to study Medicine in Cuba starting in August 2025. This fully funded scholarship is designed for academically excellent students from low-income families who are unable to afford international education.

Note: The language of instruction in Cuba is Spanish. Therefore, a one-year mandatory Spanish language preparatory programme will be provided.

Scholarship Benefits

Successful candidates will receive:

  • Tuition
  • Accommodation
  • Monthly allowances
  • Equal treatment as Cuban citizens (in terms of national currency and accommodation benefits)

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  1. Be citizens of Botswana
  2. Have a minimum of 43 points (BGCSE or equivalent), with strong performance in subjects including:
    • Physics
    • Chemistry
    • Biology
    • Double Science
  3. Have completed BGCSE or equivalent within the past 2 years
  4. Be between 16 and 25 years old
  5. Be medically fit, with documentation confirming they are free from HIV/AIDS and other transmissible diseases
  6. For female applicants, proof of non-pregnancy is required
  7. Have a valid Police Clearance Certificate with no criminal record
  8. Be from a low-income family, with verification by a registered Social Worker

Required Documents

Applicants must submit the following documents to DTEF:

i. Application letter (including contact details)
ii. Certified copy of Birth Certificate and translated copy in Spanish
iii. Ten (10) coloured passport-size photos (1×1 cm)
iv. Certified copy of a valid passport (validity more than 2 years)
v. Certified school certificate or results slip (certified by Ministry of Higher Education & Ministry of Foreign Affairs)
vi. Police Clearance Certificate
vii. Medical Certificate confirming:

  • HIV/AIDS negative
  • Hepatitis B negative
  • Negative pregnancy test (for females)

Important Notes

  • All documents must be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • Applicants already on government sponsorship (first-year semester 2 or advanced level) are not eligible
  • Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee selection
  • Selection will be based on academic merit
  • Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted
