Overview

The Department of Co-Operative Governance and Traditional Affairs is seeking to appoint 40 Community Development Workers to support various wards across Gauteng. This role is crucial in facilitating community engagement, monitoring local development initiatives, and enhancing service delivery at the grassroots level.

Responsibilities

Community Assessment: Conduct needs and asset analyses through consultations and engagements with local communities.

Monitoring and Reporting: Track and report significant trends in health, social development, and livelihood security within communities, and assess the impact of development projects.

Data Management: Maintain accurate records of household data, cases referred, and service points visited, in accordance with agreed work plans and performance contracts.

Database Maintenance: Develop and manage a database of all interventions, including referrals, remedial actions, and system improvements aimed at enhancing service delivery.

Research and Policy Awareness: Stay informed on relevant policies and legislation, and share this information with community workers and stakeholders.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Establish and maintain networks with government departments, agencies, and community development stakeholders to source and disseminate relevant information.
  • Public Participation: Participate in planned public participation initiatives and activate local communities to engage in democratic processes.
  • Community Development: Apply the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach to encourage community-led development, and support existing local projects and programs.
  • Reporting: Provide progress reports on socio-economic activities, report any irregularities, and ensure timely dissemination of information to communities.

Requirements

  • Education: Matric or an NQF level 4 qualification.
  • Experience: At least 1 year of experience in Community Development Work.
  • Skills and Competencies:
    • Knowledge of community dynamics, mobilisation, and public participation.
    • Understanding of ward boundaries and stakeholder management.
    • Familiarity with government regulations, including Batho Pele Principles, Community-Based Planning, and active citizenry.
    • Strong analytical, communication, and organisational skills.
    • Proficiency in computer usage and report writing.
    • Ability to facilitate and monitor community development initiatives.
    • Public relations and teamwork skills.
  • Location: Must reside in the ward where the vacancy is listed.
  • Additional Advantage: A valid driver’s license.
