Overview

The City of Ekurhuleni is recruiting a General Assistant to join the Blockages & Clean-up Teams in the Water & Sanitation Department. The role supports maintenance and repair of water and sewer networks, general handy work, safe plant/tool operation, and housekeeping of work sites to ensure reliable service delivery to residents.

Key Responsibilities

-Assist with maintenance, repair, and new works on water and sewer reticulation networks.

-Excavate using pick, shovel, and other hand tools; prepare pipe-beds; backfill and compact trenches.

-Enter sewer pump stations (when required) to remove rags/foreign objects and perform cleaning.

-Operate and care for mechanical equipment, tools, and small plant safely.

-Clean and restore work areas, ablution facilities, and offices after tasks are completed.

-Adhere to OHS standards, by-laws, policies, and procedures; use PPE correctly.

-Support compliance reporting and follow instructions from supervisors and artisans.

Requirements & Skills

  • Grade 10 (minimum).
  • Physically able to perform manual labour (digging, lifting, bending, entering confined spaces where applicable).
  • At least 1 year’s experience in a similar environment (water/sanitation/municipal maintenance).
  • Basic tool handling and safety awareness; willingness to work outdoors in varying conditions.
  • Teamwork, reliability, and the ability to follow directions and safety protocols.

Remuneration & Benefits

  • Salary: R171,972 – R235,896 per annum (plus benefits) in line with municipal policy.
