Job Overview:

Intercape is seeking experienced Code 14 Long Distance Coach Drivers to transport passengers across South Africa, covering all nine provinces and cross-border destinations, including Botswana, Maputo, and Windhoek. The ideal candidate should have over five years of long-distance driving experience, be well-presented, and possess excellent driving skills to ensure a safe and comfortable journey for all passengers.


Key Responsibilities:

Pre-Trip Inspection:

-Conduct and complete pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections according to Intercape’s checklist.

-Verify the Africa Fines Checklist and required travel documents.

-Ensure all necessary equipment and documentation are in place, including operating licenses, permits, logbooks, and fault books.

-Maintain and inspect luggage control sheets, trailer locks, and keys before departure.

Driving Duties:

-Drive in accordance with K53 road safety regulations.

-Ensure adherence to Intercape speed limits and all national traffic laws.

-Conduct vehicle K53 inspections after every driver changeover.

-Apply defensive driving techniques as per company training standards.

-Ensure the vehicle is not overloaded and follows the designated schedule.

-Adhere to a four-hour driving time policy for safety.

Passenger Assistance & Customer Service:

-Assist passengers with boarding and exiting the coach.

-Pay special attention to elderly passengers, unaccompanied minors, and persons with disabilities.

-Ensure that all passengers on cross-border trips possess the necessary travel documentation.

-Provide route information, directions, and support to passengers.

-Handle passenger complaints professionally and courteously.

Luggage Handling & Security:

-Load and secure luggage safely, ensuring no flammable, dangerous, or illegal substances are transported.

-Ensure all excess luggage fees are correctly recorded and receipted.

-Conduct luggage checks en-route and ensure all items are tagged with valid Intercape luggage stickers.

-Maintain parcel and package handling procedures, ensuring proper waybills and documentation are in place.

Breakdowns & Emergencies:

-Stop in a safe location and assess the situation.

-Keep passengers informed and reassured during breakdowns.

-Communicate effectively with Central Operations for assistance.

-Assist in transferring passengers to a replacement vehicle when necessary.

-Perform basic mechanical repairs if possible, including tyre changes.

Coach Hygiene & Maintenance:

-Ensure that the coach is kept clean and tidy throughout the journey.

-Conduct regular cleaning of the emergency toilet and maintain adequate hygiene supplies.

-Collect passenger rubbish at every refreshment stop.

-Report equipment malfunctions and reoccurring issues to management.

Administrative Duties:

-Verify boarding passes and passenger tickets.

-Maintain a valid and updated manifest.

-Record and balance excess luggage and onboard sales (OBS) transactions.

-Submit all completed documents and receipts at the end of each trip.

-Ensure that headcounts are performed at major stops and refreshment breaks.


Requirements & Skills:

Minimum Qualifications:

Grade 10 (Standard 8) minimum education requirement.

Valid EC (Code 14) or EC1 04 (Code 11) License.

Valid PrDP (Professional Driving Permit) – must be valid for at least three months.

No outstanding traffic fines.

Own cellular phone for communication.

Clear criminal and Nexis Lexis report.

Reliable transport (or access to suitable public transport).

Fluency in English and one additional language (Bilingual proficiency preferred).

Experience:

-A minimum of three years of long-distance driving experience on South African roads.

-Experience handling passenger complaints and emergency situations professionally.

Additional Requirements:

-Must be between 28 to 60 years old.

Accident-free driving record.

-Ability to remain calm under pressure and handle challenging situations effectively.

-Professional, well-groomed, and customer-focused attitude.

  • Passenger and operational crew feedback on service quality.
  • Compliance with safety and traffic regulations.
  • Tracking reports and driving efficiency records.

  • Maintenance and cleanliness of the coach.
