Overview:

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is recruiting 5500 eligible and enthusiastic individuals for the 2025/2026 Police Trainee intake. This national recruitment drive invites applications from young South Africans who are committed to building a safer nation and pursuing a career in law enforcement.

Successful candidates will be enlisted into the Basic Police Development Learning Programme and considered for permanent appointment as Constables after successful training.


Core Responsibilities:

Upon successful appointment, trainees will serve as fully functional police officials, tasked with:

  • Preventing, combating, and investigating crime.
  • Maintaining public order.
  • Protecting and securing all inhabitants of the Republic and their property.
  • Upholding and enforcing the law.

Generic Requirements:

Applicants must:

  • Be a South African citizen (documentary proof required).
  • Be aged between 18 and 35 years old at the time of application.
  • Possess a Grade 12 school certificate or equivalent (documentary proof required).
  • Be proficient in at least English and one other official language.
  • Be physically, medically, and mentally fit for training (medical exam required).
  • Undergo psychological integrity assessments.
  • Have no visible tattoos while in uniform.
  • Not have any criminal convictions or pending cases.
  • Not have been declared unfit to possess a firearm.
  • Not have been dismissed for serious misconduct from previous employment.
  • Be willing to undergo training as prescribed by the National Commissioner.
  • Be prepared to serve anywhere in the Republic of South Africa.
  • Allow fingerprint and DNA samples for criminal record verification.
  • Undergo security clearance and background checks.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants who:

  • Possess a valid driverโ€™s license for a light motor vehicle.
  • Hold a three-year tertiary qualification (NQF 6 or higher) in:
    • Criminal Law
    • Policing
    • Forensic Investigation
    • Related fields
  • Have a Grade 12 certificate that qualifies for:
    • Bachelorโ€™s Degree admission
    • Diploma admission
    • Higher Certificate admission

Selection Process:

  • Applicants will undergo fitness assessments, psychometric testing, medical evaluations, interviews, and full vetting.
  • Vetting will include criminal record checks, reference checks, social media screening, and biometric verification.
  • Applicants with chronic health conditions that may disrupt training may be excluded.
  • Only successful applicants will be contacted within 3 months of the closing date.
  • Applicants are limited to one application per cycle.
  • Appointment is not guaranteed and is subject to available posts and successful completion of all assessments.
