Position Purpose

Transnet is recruiting Apprentice Boilermakers to join its Learning & Performance programme in Durban.
This apprenticeship prepares trainees to become competent artisans capable of working independently in manufacturing, assembly, installation, and repair environments.

The programme develops practical and theoretical skills needed to plan, fabricate, inspect, maintain, and repair boilermaker structures and components.

Key Responsibilities (Position Outputs)

As an Apprentice Boilermaker, you will be trained to:

• Plan, prepare, and set up the work area, tools, equipment, materials, and consumables
• Use hand, power, and precision measuring tools
• Manufacture, assemble, modify, and repair metal components
• Inspect, test, and commission boilermaker installations and assemblies
• Prepare and interpret engineering drawings for fabrication
• Apply boilermaker trade techniques in various work contexts
• Ensure compliance with safety procedures and operational standards
• Assist with general workshop duties and maintenance activities

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

You must have one (1) of the following:

Option 1: N2 Subjects

• Mathematics (Pure)
• Engineering Science
• Plating & Structural Drawing
• Engineering Drawing (Draughting)
• Metal Worker’s Theory
• Plater’s Theory

Option 2: N3–N6 Subjects

• Mathematics (Pure)
• Engineering Science
• Plating & Structural Drawing
• Engineering Drawing (Draughting)
• Mechanotechnology

Option 3: NCV Level 4

• Fundamentals (including English First Additional Language, Mathematics, Life Orientation)
• Vocational Subjects: Engineering Process, Professional Engineering Practice, Applied Engineering Technology, Welding

Option 4: Technical Grade 12

• Mechanical Technology (Welding & Metal Work)
• Mathematics
• Engineering Graphics & Design
• Physical Science
• Home Language + First Additional Language
