Ouaddou Highlights Key Growth Areas for Mbokazi Ahead of Chicago Fire Move

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has shared insight into what young defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi must sharpen as he prepares for his high-profile move to the United Statesโ€™ Major League Soccer (MLS) with Chicago Fire FC.

The American club recently confirmed Mbokaziโ€™s signing on a four-year contract with an additional option, in a transfer reportedly valued at $3 million (approximately R53 million) โ€” one of the notable African player moves into the US soccer market ahead of the 2026 season.

Transition From PSL to MLS Spotlight

Mbokazi is expected to officially join Chicago Fire after completing his duties at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, where international exposure could further boost his profile and market value.

Ouaddou, who worked closely with the centre-back during his final six months at Pirates, believes the talent is clear โ€” but insists the next phase of Mbokaziโ€™s career will require strong leadership development, especially in a fast-paced league like MLS.

Leadership and Communication Key in US Soccer

According to Ouaddou, success in the American league will depend on more than technical ability.

โ€œHe has a very good future,โ€ said Ouaddou.
โ€œBut in the United States, especially in MLS, he must grow as a leader โ€” particularly in communication within the defensive line.โ€

The Pirates coach emphasised that centre-backs in top leagues are expected to organise, command, and control the back four, especially when teams play with a high defensive line.

โ€œCommunication becomes critical,โ€ he added.
โ€œWhen you play as a central defender, and even more so as a potential captain, you must take responsibility, direct others, and lead from the back. Thatโ€™s where his biggest improvement can come.โ€

Proven Record at Orlando Pirates

Before securing his lucrative overseas contract, Mbokazi made 39 appearances for Orlando Pirates, contributing two goals and two assists โ€” impressive numbers for a defender still early in his professional career.

His performances not only earned him international recognition but also placed him among the most promising South African exports to MLS, a league that continues to invest heavily in young African talent.

Big Opportunity, Bigger Expectations

With Chicago Fire investing significantly in the defender, expectations will be high both on and off the pitch. Improved leadership, tactical communication, and adaptability to the US football environment could determine how quickly Mbokazi establishes himself in the MLS.
