Introduction

The South African Police Service invites applications from experienced and suitably qualified professionals for the position of Occupational Health & Safety Inspector (Captain) within its Supply Chain Management (SCM) environment at Head Office in Pretoria.

This senior role is ideal for candidates with strong expertise in construction health and safety management, regulatory compliance, and site inspection, who wish to contribute to safe, compliant, and well-governed infrastructure projects within a national government institution.

Salary / Remuneration

  • Band C: R461,676 โ€“ R568,665 per annum (excluding benefits)

Core Functions & Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be responsible for ensuring full construction health and safety compliance, including:

  • Preparing and managing construction work permit applications
  • Drafting client health and safety specifications
  • Compiling project baseline risk assessments
  • Drafting mandatory agreements and contractor H&S appointments
  • Reviewing and approving contractorsโ€™ health and safety plans
  • Conducting monthly site inspections and compiling inspection reports
  • Performing monthly legal compliance audits on principal contractors
  • Preparing Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) compliance reports
  • Compiling project close-out reports
  • Executing all Construction Health & Safety duties as prescribed by SACPCMP

Generic Minimum Requirements

All applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or NCV (NQF Level 4) recorded on NLRD
  • Proficiency in at least two official languages, one being English
  • South African citizenship with documentary proof
  • Valid light motor vehicle driverโ€™s licence
  • No previous convictions or pending criminal, civil, or departmental cases
  • No visible tattoos when wearing SAPS uniform
  • Willingness to undergo security vetting, fingerprint verification, and screening

Additional & Professional Requirements

  • Three-year National Diploma (NQF Level 6 or higher) in:
    • Construction Health & Safety Management
    • Or an equivalent qualification relevant to the post
  • Compulsory registration with the
    South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP)
    (Candidate Health & Safety Officer or higher)
  • Minimum 1 year post-registration experience

  • Clear verbal and written communication skills
  • Sound knowledge of current OHS legislation, regulations, and standards
