Dis-Chem Pharmacies Limited is recruiting Dispensary Support (Learner Basic Pharmacist Assistant) candidates across various stores in South Africa. This opportunity is ideal for individuals who meet the academic requirements and wish to complete the Learner Basic Pharmacist Assistant course while gaining practical retail pharmacy experience.

Successful candidates will be employed on a fixed-term or contract basis until registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a Learner Basic Pharmacist Assistant. Permanent employment may be considered once qualified and registered.

Job Overview

The purpose of the Dispensary Support role is to develop learners through structured workplace exposure and formal training in pharmaceutical dispensing. The programme equips learners with knowledge of pharmaceutical operations, stock control, script interpretation, customer service, and regulatory compliance within a retail pharmacy environment.

Employment is on a fixed-term basis until SAPC learner registration is completed.


Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 / Matric
  • Pure Mathematics (minimum 50%)
  • Life Science and/or Physical Science (minimum average 50%)
  • South African citizen
  • Clear criminal and credit record
  • Ability to pass a proficiency test for SAPC learner registration

Key Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist:

  • Assist with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines
  • Support the compounding and preparation of non-sterile medicines
  • Accurately pick, pack, label, and prepare medication
  • Ensure all medication is checked and signed off by a pharmacist
  • Assist with stock control and monitor expiry dates
  • Unpack and merchandise dispensary stock
  • Follow up with patients regarding scripts and appointments
  • Assist with scheme authorisations (chronic, HIV, oncology medication)
  • Maintain dispensary cleanliness and adherence to SOPs
  • Provide basic health-related information to customers

Competencies

  • Strong communication skills (English and a second language)
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Time management and ability to work under pressure
  • Customer-focused with professional conduct
  • Computer literacy and numerical skills
  • Teamwork and accountability

Advantageous:

  • Retail or FMCG experience
  • Unisolv, SAP or E-Scripting knowledge
  • Front shop pharmacy experience

Special Conditions of Employment

  • Must complete and pass the proficiency assessment
  • Must be eligible for SAPC registration as a Learner Basic Pharmacist Assistant
  • Willing to work retail hours
