Overview
The University of the Free State (UFS) is seeking a dedicated and reliable Messenger/Cleaner (Post Level 16) to join the Student Counselling and Development (SCD) team at the Bloemfontein Campus.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining cleanliness, supporting administrative tasks, assisting with events, and ensuring a professional and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
1. Cleaning Administration
- Clean and sanitise offices, counselling rooms, waiting areas, restrooms and common areas
- Wash dishes daily and keep kitchen areas clean and tidy
- Ensure waiting areas are neat and properly arranged
- Empty trash bins and dispose of waste correctly
- Sweep, mop and vacuum floors
- Dust and polish furniture and fittings
- Clean windows, mirrors and glass partitions
- Restock toiletries and cleaning supplies
- Report maintenance or repair issues to the Office Manager
- Follow health and safety guidelines
- Store cleaning materials safely
2. Client Interaction
- Maintain a friendly and professional attitude
- Respond to cleaning requests promptly
- Support departmental events by ensuring cleanliness
- Monitor cleaning stock levels and report shortages
- Assist with ordering cleaning materials
- Participate in meetings and training sessions
3. General Administration
- Assist with shredding and filing
- Submit inventory lists of office supplies
- Set up meeting rooms
- Collect and deliver mail and materials
- Serve tea, water and refreshments for meetings and management
Minimum (Inherent) Requirements
- Grade 10 (NQF Level 2) โ proof must be attached
- Relevant experience relating to the listed duties

Recommendations (Advantageous)
- Grade 12 (NQF Level 4)
- 1 year relevant experience
- Fluent in English (read, write and speak)
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Residing in or near Bloemfontein
- Competency in an additional African language
- Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and safety regulations
