Overview

Transnet Freight Rail is currently recruiting a Trainee Train Assistant in Swartkops.

This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in building a career in the railway and freight transport industry. Successful applicants will assist Train Drivers in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of freight and passenger trains across the rail network.

The programme includes both practical workplace experience and structured training, preparing candidates to work independently as qualified Train Assistants.


Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 with:
    • Mathematics / Pure Mathematics
    • Physical Science

Additional Requirements

-Must be 21 years or older

-Must be at least 1.6 metres tall

-Must be physically, mentally, and medically fit

-Ability to carry heavy objects

-Must undergo medical and safety behavioural assessments

-Willingness to work shifts and irregular hours


Training & Development

Successful candidates will:

-Undergo theoretical and practical training

-Complete Train Assistant certification requirements

-Participate in continuous safety and medical assessments

-Gain experience in locomotive and train operations


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Train Drivers during train operations
  • Prepare locomotives and communication equipment
  • Conduct brake tests and safety inspections
  • Assist with shunting activities and wagon handling
  • Monitor train movement and safety procedures
  • Support emergency and incident handling
  • Complete train journals and administrative duties
