Remuneration: R311.00 per day (EPWP rate)

Overview

Golden Gate Highlands National Park invites applications for five (5) Skilled Environmental Monitors (Conservation) under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). These field-based roles support conservation law enforcement, ecological management, fire management, and infrastructure maintenance across challenging mountainous terrain. Successful candidates must provide their own reliable transport and accommodation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct conservation law enforcement activities: patrols, monitoring, anti-poaching, and problem animal control by foot, horse, or vehicle.
  • Assist with infrastructure and environmental maintenance: fences, trails, roads, soil-erosion and rehabilitation systems.
  • Maintain accurate incident/sighting records and complete vehicle logbooks.
  • Support conservation operations as required, including clearing of invasive/alien species.
  • Assist with fire management (wildfire suppression, firebreaks, prescribed burns).
  • Provide support at the stables for horse-riding activities.
  • Perform other ad-hoc duties as directed by Corporals/Section Ranger.

Requirements & Skills

Minimum

  • Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 (Standard 10).
  • Physically fit and able to conduct extended patrols in mountainous terrain.
  • Willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and after-hours.
  • Valid SAPS Clearance Certificate; no criminal record.
  • Willingness to undergo a medical fitness examination by a certified medical practitioner.
  • Willingness to undergo a fitness assessment during recruitment.
  • Own reliable transport and accommodation (no staff housing provided).

Advantages

  • Valid driverโ€™s licence.
  • Firearm competency in Self-Loading Rifles, Manually Operated Rifles, and 9mm Pistols.
  • Proficiency in additional official languages and strong communication skills.

Reporting

  • Reports directly to Corporals/Section Ranger.
