Overview:

The Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs (DARDLEA) is seeking to appoint 112 Farm Workers under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). This initiative is part of the government’s strategy to provide temporary employment to South African citizens, including women, youth, and persons with disabilities, while promoting agricultural development and food security.

Successful candidates will be placed in agricultural farms and research facilities across Mpumalanga where they will assist with various farming and livestock-related duties. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on agricultural experience while contributing to local food production and sustainability efforts.


Workstation Locations Include:

  • TIPTAP Piggery (Bohlabela)
  • Vegetable & Herbs Farm – Ermelo (Gert Sibande)
  • Athole Research Farm, Crop Research Site (Gert Sibande)
  • Barberton Senteeko Tea Estate (Ehlanzeni)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with crop planting, weeding, watering, fertilizing, and harvesting.
  • Help with piggery and livestock feeding, cleaning, and handling.
  • Operate basic farming tools and equipment under supervision.
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in farm environments.
  • Follow safety and operational guidelines during fieldwork.
  • Support agricultural extension activities as directed by supervisors.

Requirements and Skills:

  • Minimum Qualification: Grade 10.
  • Additional Requirements (for some roles):
    • Ability to read and write.
    • Experience working with crops or animals is advantageous.
  • Skills:
    • Physical fitness and willingness to work outdoors.
    • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
    • Basic knowledge of farm operations and practices.
    • Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
