Overview
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is offering internship opportunities within the Data Intensive Research Initiative of South Africa (DIRISA), part of the National Integrated Cyberinfrastructure System (NICIS). Hosted by the Next Generation Enterprises and Institutions cluster, this internship is designed to provide recent graduates with hands-on experience in research, data science, and innovation.
Interns will contribute to impactful data-driven projects under the guidance of experienced researchers and engineers.
Key Responsibilities
-Support DIRISA projects by identifying user needs, collecting and analyzing data, interpreting results, and presenting visual insights.
-Apply machine learning, data mining, and statistical algorithms to help solve real-world challenges.
-Assist with software development for DIRISAโs data-focused initiatives.
-Participate in DIRISA outreach programmes such as the Student Datathon Challenge and Coding School through challenge design, training, and content updates.
-Attend technical and on-the-job training sessions.
-Contribute to knowledge development by engaging in conferences, symposiums, and related events.
Requirements and Skills
Minimum Qualifications:
-Bachelorโs degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Information Technology, or related fields.
-Honours degree and certifications in Data Science will be advantageous.
-Participation in the DIRISA Student Datathon Challenge is an added advantage.
Technical Skills:
-Understanding of the data science lifecycle.
-Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, scripting, and Linux OS.
-Exposure to software development and web frameworks for prototyping.

-Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
-Effective verbal and written communication skills.
-Ability to work independently and collaboratively in diverse teams.
-Good time management and attention to detail.
