Overview

The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) is appointing Independent Correctional Centre Visitors (ICCVs) nationwide. ICCVs safeguard inmate rights by conducting daily visits, recording and escalating complaints, monitoring detention conditions, and supporting JICS in inspections and investigations. This is a meaningful, community-facing role for service-oriented individuals committed to dignity, transparency, and justice.

Key Responsibilities

-Conduct daily visits to allocated correctional centres; engage inmates and DCS officials.

-Receive, record, and report complaints, grievances, and incidents; ensure timely escalation.

-Monitor detention conditions against human-rights standards; document non-compliance.

-Compile reports on serious matters: deaths in custody, segregation, mechanical restraints, use of force.

-Support JICS inspections/investigations and maintain accurate registers and records.

Requirements & Skills

Grade 12 / Senior Certificate.

Computer literacy with high accuracy.

Mandatory: Recommendation/nomination letter (โ‰ค6 months old) from a recognised community organisation.

-Strong community-service orientation; knowledge of Batho Pele principles.

-Good interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills; assertive and composed under pressure.

-Ability to work independently and in a team; valid driverโ€™s licence advantageous.

Residency near the centre applied for will receive preference.
