Transnet Freight Rail is recruiting Trainee Train Assistants in Bellville. This opportunity is ideal for young, physically fit and safety-conscious individuals who want to build a long-term career in the railway and freight logistics sector.
This structured trainee programme prepares candidates to assist Train Drivers in the safe and efficient handling of various types of trains, including heavy haul, passenger and high-speed services.
It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that HR has received the application before the closing date.
Position Purpose
To assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient operation of trains and locomotive consists, ensuring that freight and cargo reach their destination safely, on time and without damage, while adhering to strict railway safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
-Sign on duty and prepare locomotives for service
-Conduct locomotive brake tests and assist with start-up procedures
-Prepare communication equipment (radios, handsets, telemeters)
-Perform pre-trip inspections to ensure train roadworthiness
-Attach and detach vehicles in accordance with works orders
-Execute shunting activities safely in sidings and en route
-Assist the Train Driver during operations and emergencies
-Monitor signals and observe safe train running procedures
-Reset locomotive trip-outs where required
-Complete train journals and administrative documentation
-Comply with all safety standards, operational procedures and railway rules
Minimum Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science
Other Mandatory Requirements
- Minimum height of 1.6 metres
- Must be 21 years or older (as per SANS 3000 requirements)
- Physically fit (hearing, vision, mental and physical fitness verified through medical testing)
- Ability to carry heavy objects
- Psychomotor ability (assessed via Vienna Testing System standards)
- Willingness to undergo medical surveillance and safety behavioural risk assessments during selection and annually
Functional Training
Successful candidates must:
- Undergo theoretical and practical training
- Successfully obtain a Train Assistant certificate
- Be certified to work independently as a Train Assistant
Knowledge & Skills Required
- Understanding of train working rules and shunting procedures
- Knowledge of locomotive classes and hauling capacities
- Communication systems and depot layouts
- Health and Safety Act compliance
- Strong observation, concentration and spatial awareness
- Time management and stress handling
- Problem-solving and sound judgement
- Numerical and literacy skills
- Ability to operate diesel and electric locomotives
