Position Purpose

Transnet Freight Rail is looking for Trainee Train Assistants who will undergo a structured training program to develop competency in train operations. The successful candidates will be responsible for assisting train drivers in ensuring the safe movement of trains and cargo.

Key Responsibilities

-Sign on duty at the designated workplace and prepare locomotives for operation.

-Obtain and place necessary equipment on the locomotive.

-Assist with the startup and brake testing of locomotives.

-Conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure compliance with safety and operational standards.

-Execute shunting activities in sidings and enroute as per work orders.

-Assist the Train Driver in monitoring train movement and responding to emergency situations.

-Ensure proper communication via radios and telemeters.

-Maintain accurate records, including train journals and incident reports.

Qualifications and Experience

Educational Requirements:

  • Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be at least 1.6 meters tall.
  • Psychomotor ability will be assessed through Vienna Testing System (VTS).
  • Must be physically and mentally fit (subject to medical tests and safety behavioral risk assessments).
  • Must be at least 21 years old to undertake train driver or control duties (SANS 3000 regulations).
  • Willingness to carry heavy objects as required by operational duties.

Functional Training:

  • Must successfully complete both theoretical and practical components of Train Assistant training.
  • Must be willing and able to obtain a Train Assistant certificate upon completion of training.

Competencies Required

Knowledge of:

  • Train working rules and safety regulations.
  • Depot layout, yard, and siding arrangements.
  • Various communication systems used in train operations.
  • Locomotive equipment and maintenance requirements.
  • Health and Safety Act and Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA).

Skills:

  • Locomotive coupling and uncoupling.
  • Time management and problem-solving.
  • Observation and spatial awareness.
  • Stress management and concentration.
  • Effective communication and teamwork.

Attributes:

  • Safety-conscious and punctual.
  • Willing to work shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Results-driven with the ability to work under pressure.
