Position Purpose:
Transnet Freight Rail is seeking a committed and safety-conscious Trainee Train Assistant to support Train Drivers in the safe and efficient handling of trains and locomotives, including freight, passenger, and high-speed trains. The role ensures customer cargo is delivered on time and in excellent condition, contributing to Transnet’s mission to deliver reliable and safe freight services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Sign on duty and prepare for shift tasks with the Train Driver
- Assist in the preparation of locomotives, including brake tests and equipment checks
- Handle communication devices and verify operational functionality
- Perform pre-trip inspections to ensure train roadworthiness
- Attach/detach wagons as per work orders
- Perform shunting activities, siding operations, and train protection measures
- Assist with safe train operation enroute, including monitoring and emergency response
- Complete administrative tasks such as train journals and submit accurate reports post-shift
- Comply with safety standards, railway regulations, and company procedures
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science
- Must be at least 1.6 meters tall
- Must be 21 years or older (as per SANS 3000 standards)
- Medical fitness including vision, hearing, physical and mental readiness (to be confirmed through medical and behavioral safety assessments)
- Psychomotor ability assessment via Vienna Testing System (VTS)
- Willingness to carry heavy equipment
- Must be able to complete theoretical and practical training to become a certified Train Assistant
Functional Training:
Successful candidates must be willing and able to undergo extensive theoretical and practical training to be certified as Train Assistants, and work independently in that capacity.
