This role ensures that cargo reaches its destination in optimal condition and on time, supporting Transnet&#8217;s commitment to customer satisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Responsibilities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sign On and Shift Duties<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Begin shifts by signing on, receiving assignments, and preparing the designated locomotive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Place and check necessary equipment, clean work areas, assist with locomotive start-up, and perform brake tests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Locomotive and Equipment Preparation<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prepare communication devices (radios, handsets) and check functionality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure train readiness, safety compliance, and adherence to train operating standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Operational Tasks and Shunting<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Perform shunting activities, update vehicle lists, and follow directives for truck placement and removal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aid the train driver en route, ensuring safe transit without delays or equipment damage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Safety and Communication<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Communicate with the train driver to verify signal positions, monitor train operations, and assist during emergencies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide feedback on incidents or deviations along the route.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Administrative Duties<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete the Train Journal and submit it post-shift to support accurate payroll processing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Qualifications and Experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Educational Requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and\/or Physical Science.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Other Requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Minimum age: 21 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Minimum height: 1.6 meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Must be physically fit, with verified hearing, vision, and mental fitness (assessed through medical evaluations and safety risk assessments).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Psychomotor ability will be assessed via the Vienna Testing System.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Functional Training:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Willingness to undergo theoretical and practical training for Train Assistant duties to achieve independent certification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Competencies and Skills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Knowledge:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Familiarity with communication systems, locomotive classes, route layouts, train working rules, safety standards, and shunting procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Understanding of health and safety regulations, employment laws, and Transnet policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Skills:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Proficiency in locomotive preparation, coupling\/uncoupling, shunting movements, time management, and problem-solving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Strong observational, communication, spatial awareness, and psychomotor skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Attributes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Self-management, stress
