NSFAS 2026 Applications Are Now Open in South Africa
Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)
Thousands of students across South Africa have been waiting for this moment — the official opening of the 2026 National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) applications. The scheme has now confirmed that applications will open on 15 September 2025, giving prospective students the opportunity to secure funding for their studies next year.
What is NSFAS?
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funds over one million students every year, covering tuition and registration fees, as well as a range of allowances to help students succeed at universities and TVET colleges.
The bursary includes:
- Tuition and registration fees
- Accommodation allowance (or transport allowance for students living at home)
- Meal allowance (not applicable to students in catered accommodation)
- Stationery and learning materials allowance
This comprehensive support package is designed to remove the financial barriers to higher education.
Why Applications Opened in September
NSFAS strategically opens applications after the SARS tax period to ensure that the most accurate financial information is available for assessments. This timing also helps the scheme process applications more efficiently.
Importantly, Grade 12 learners do not need their final matric results to apply. If you plan to study at a public university or TVET college in 2026, you can apply now.
What’s New for 2026?
- Mobile App Launch: A brand-new NSFAS mobile application will be available for iOS, Android, and later Huawei users. It will also include biometric features for added security.
- Multiple Access Points: Students can track applications via the NSFAS app, WhatsApp at 078 519 8006, or USSD by dialling *120*67327#.
- Improved Verification: NSFAS is working with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to strengthen parental verification processes, aiming to reduce delays.
Who Qualifies for NSFAS Funding?
To apply for NSFAS in 2026, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen
- Be a SASSA grant recipient, OR
- Have a combined household income of R350,000 or less per year
- For students with disabilities: combined household income must not exceed R600,000 per year
Important Reminders
- Apply early: Don’t wait until you have your matric results.
- Provide accurate information: Incorrect details may lead to rejection.
- Appeals: If your application is rejected, you will have the chance to appeal by submitting the required supporting documents.
NSFAS Challenges and Commitment
The Minister of Higher Education acknowledged challenges with NSFAS systems but assured students that improvements are underway. With nearly 2 million applications received in 2025, efficiency is a top priority going forward.
