Overview
Are you ready to join our team as a General Assistant in Kathu? At BME, a division of Omnia, we’re seeking someone to assist our Truck Operator in collecting products at silos and delivering them down the hole at the blasting face. Your role is crucial in ensuring that our vehicle meets all specifications while carrying out these tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct risk assessments and safe work declarations with the blaster before entering the workplace, meeting client requirements.
  • Assist the blaster in preparing the blast/charge-up area to meet statutory, legal, client, and BME standards.
  • Collaborate with the blaster to inspect the site, determine the target block, and plan the blasting process.
  • Erect prescribed barricading material to mark off the working area as required by the client.
  • Map the holes to ensure correct placement and measure/check their depth within prescribed parameters.
  • Take assertive action to rectify any deviations from prescriptions, such as interacting with mine staff or contractors.
  • Collect the correct accessories as instructed by the blaster for successful blasting assignments.
  • Place detonators and boosters at the collar of the hole to prepare for priming according to the blast plan issued by the mine.
  • Prime the holes by inserting detonators into boosters, attaching weigh-down material to the primer, and lowering it into the hole under the blaster’s supervision.

Requirements

  • Grade 12/Matric with Mathematics
  • Code 08/Code B Driver’s Licence
  • Magazine Master Ticket
  • Blasting Assistant Certificate (obtained from the Mining Qualifications Authority)
  • Stemming Loader
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Numerical skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong communication/interpersonal skills
  • Report-writing abilities
  • Previous experience in a blasting/mining environment
  • 2 years of Blasting Assistant experience
