SHE Officer – Jwaneng Underground Mining Development Project

Overview:
Redpath Botswana, a subsidiary of Redpath – the world’s premier full-service underground mining contractor, is seeking a qualified and experienced SHE (Safety, Health, and Environmental) Officer for the Jwaneng Underground Mining Development Project. This position is responsible for overseeing and enhancing safety, health, and environmental management systems, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and promoting a culture of safety within the mining operations.
This is a full-time role that requires expertise in safety management within the underground mining environment, offering an opportunity to contribute to the development of one of Botswana’s most significant mining projects.
Key Responsibilities:
-Develop, implement, and maintain safety procedures and protocols specific to underground mining operations, including risk management and hazard identification.
-Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of mining equipment, operations, and facilities to ensure compliance with safety standards.
-Investigate accidents, near-misses, and incidents, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
-Ensure compliance with occupational health regulations, including monitoring workplace conditions and employee health.
-Promote health awareness and provide guidance on health-related issues within the mining environment.
-Develop and enforce environmental management plans to minimize the impact of mining operations on the environment.
-Monitor and manage environmental aspects such as waste management, water and air quality, and reclamation activities.
-Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations and manage reporting requirements.
-Design and deliver SHE training programs for employees, including safety inductions, emergency response, and environmental awareness.
-Develop, implement, and regularly review emergency response plans specific to mining operations, including evacuation procedures and first aid.
-Conduct emergency drills and simulations to ensure staff preparedness for various emergency scenarios.
-Maintain comprehensive records of safety inspections, incident reports, training activities, and environmental performance.
-Prepare and present regular reports on SHE performance and compliance to management and regulatory bodies.
Requirements and Skills:
- Educational Qualifications:
- Recognised Diploma in Safety Management, Environmental, and Occupational Health.
- Safety Management Training Course (SAMTRAC) or equivalent certification.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years’ underground mining experience, preferably in SHE roles.
- Experience with all mobile equipment for maintenance purposes is an advantage.
- Certifications:
- Valid Driver’s Licence.
- First Aid & CPR certification.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficient in developing and implementing safety management systems.
- Strong knowledge of occupational health regulations and environmental management practices.
- Experience in conducting safety inspections, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
- Other Requirements:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective training and stakeholder engagement.
- Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing project demands.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and record-keeping.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
