KwaZulu-Natal Weather Alert: Snowfall Expected on 30 September and 1 October 2024
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (KZNCOGTA) have issued warnings about a strong possibility of snowfall on Monday, 30 September, and Tuesday, 1 October 2024.
A cold front is forecast to move in over the weekend, bringing cold air eastward. Rainfall is expected to start on Sunday, continuing through to Wednesday. Significant rainfall is anticipated in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, including Durban and other coastal areas.
Areas expected to be affected by potential snowfall:
-Ladysmith
-Underberg
-Drakensberg
-Van Reenen Pass (N3)
In preparation for potential road disruptions, the KZN Road Traffic Inspectorate will establish a satellite centre at Van Reenen Pass from Saturday afternoon. This setup is intended to manage any necessary road closures. Additionally, SANRAL is coordinating joint operations under the Road Incident Management Systems (RIMS) to ensure road safety.
Motorists are strongly advised to postpone or reschedule their travel plans. Truck drivers and the general public are urged to exercise extreme caution on the roads during this time.
