Position: Train Assistant
Position Purpose
The Train Assistant Internship offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced train drivers, assisting with the safe and efficient handling of various types of trains, including airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy-haul, and passenger trains. This role ensures that cargo reaches its destination in optimal condition and on time, supporting Transnet’s commitment to customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Sign On and Shift Duties
- Begin shifts by signing on, receiving assignments, and preparing the designated locomotive.
- Place and check necessary equipment, clean work areas, assist with locomotive start-up, and perform brake tests.
- Locomotive and Equipment Preparation
- Prepare communication devices (radios, handsets) and check functionality.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure train readiness, safety compliance, and adherence to train operating standards.
- Operational Tasks and Shunting
- Perform shunting activities, update vehicle lists, and follow directives for truck placement and removal.
- Aid the train driver en route, ensuring safe transit without delays or equipment damage.
- Safety and Communication
- Communicate with the train driver to verify signal positions, monitor train operations, and assist during emergencies.
- Provide feedback on incidents or deviations along the route.
- Administrative Duties
- Complete the Train Journal and submit it post-shift to support accurate payroll processing.
Qualifications and Experience
Educational Requirements:
- Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
Other Requirements:
-Minimum age: 21 years.
-Minimum height: 1.6 meters.
-Must be physically fit, with verified hearing, vision, and mental fitness (assessed through medical evaluations and safety risk assessments).
-Psychomotor ability will be assessed via the Vienna Testing System.
Functional Training:
- Willingness to undergo theoretical and practical training for Train Assistant duties to achieve independent certification.
Competencies and Skills
Knowledge:
-Familiarity with communication systems, locomotive classes, route layouts, train working rules, safety standards, and shunting procedures.
-Understanding of health and safety regulations, employment laws, and Transnet policies.
Skills:
-Proficiency in locomotive preparation, coupling/uncoupling, shunting movements, time management, and problem-solving.
-Strong observational, communication, spatial awareness, and psychomotor skills.
Attributes:
-Self-management, stress handling, safety awareness, punctuality, and a results-oriented mindset.
-Flexibility to work shifts as required.
