Overview

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is hiring 66 General Workers across several operational centres in South Africa. These positions form part of the Departmentโ€™s infrastructure maintenance and operations teams, responsible for general upkeep of water supply systems, canals, dams, pipelines, and related facilities.

Applicants with practical experience in gardening, maintenance, or similar manual work environments are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Requirements

ABET Certificate (Grade 9 or equivalent)

Higher qualifications or experience in manual/general work will be advantageous

-Knowledge of handling equipment and appliances

  • Basic understanding of:
    • Lawn care and gardening practices
    • Pruning and trimming techniques
    • Chemical use (dilution/mix) and product handling
    • Health and Safety procedures (OHS)
    • Water resource management and maintenance procedures
  • Must be willing to work in and around rivers, dams, confined spaces, and under varied weather conditions

Key Responsibilities

-Perform general assistant and maintenance work as assigned by the supervisor

-Load/off-load equipment, furniture, and materials

-Clean and maintain government vehicles, machinery, and work areas

-Conduct routine inspections and upkeep of canals, pipelines, and dams

-Support lawn and garden maintenance including watering, pruning, weeding, raking, and mowing

-Apply fertilizers, herbicides, and perform fire break maintenance where needed

-Clean public areas, workshops, and buildings

-Assist in minor repairs of fences, benches, tools, and structures

-Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations

-Report hazards, faults, and defects to supervisors promptly

-Physical fitness and ability to perform manual labour

-Good communication and teamwork skills

-Basic literacy and ability to follow safety instructions

-Attention to detail and reliability in performing assigned tasks
