Introduction
SPAR Group (North Rand Division) is seeking a highly skilled and proactive Risk Controller to oversee, manage, and maintain compliance with all Risk, Safety, Health, Environmental, and Food Safety standards across the division.
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993) and other relevant legislation, while driving continuous improvement in safety culture, risk control, and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
1. Risk Management & Compliance
-Identify, assess, and mitigate safety, environmental, and operational hazards.
-Maintain and update risk registers and implement effective control measures.
-Oversee adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act) and related regulations.
-Conduct regular audits, inspections, and risk assessments across all business units.
2. Health, Safety & Environmental Control
-Lead incident investigations, root-cause analysis, and corrective action planning.
-Promote a zero-harm safety culture through education, communication, and enforcement.
-Ensure compliance with environmental standards, waste management, and sustainability initiatives.
-Manage permits, compliance documentation, and emergency preparedness protocols.
3. Food Safety & Quality Systems
-Implement, monitor, and maintain food safety systems (HACCP and related standards).
-Conduct regular site inspections and audits to ensure compliance with ISO 22000, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001.
-Support business units in achieving and maintaining food and occupational safety certifications.
4. Training & Awareness
-Develop and deliver SHEQ training and awareness programmes to build safety competence among staff.
-Reinforce compliance through structured workshops, toolbox talks, and refresher training sessions.
5. Reporting & Documentation
-Prepare accurate risk, incident, and audit reports for internal and external stakeholders.
-Maintain a comprehensive record-keeping and reporting system for all safety and risk activities.
-Assist management with trend analysis and recommendations to reduce exposure and improve safety performance.
Minimum Requirements
Education:
- Degree or Diploma in Risk Management, Safety Management, Food Technology, or related field โ required
- Matric (Grade 12) โ essential
- SAMTRAC / SHEMTRAC โ advantageous
Experience:
- 2โ5 yearsโ experience in a Risk, Safety, or SHEQ role (preferably within Retail or FMCG).
- Strong understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993.
- Knowledge of ISO 22000, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 standards โ beneficial.
