Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has spoken candidly about the challenges of breaking into the Bafana Bafana national team, despite producing one of the strongest seasons of his professional career.

The 31-year-old shot-stopper has been a standout performer for Chiefs, registering an impressive 11 clean sheets in just 18 appearances across all competitions — numbers that place him among the most consistent goalkeepers in South African football this season.

Strong Club Form, Limited National Opportunities

Petersen’s performances have not gone unnoticed. He has been named in several Bafana Bafana provisional squads, including the extended 54-man preliminary group for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

However, he narrowly missed out on a place in the final squad — a setback that highlights the intense competition for goalkeeping positions at national level.

“I Can Only Control My Performances” — Petersen

Despite the disappointment, Petersen remains grounded and focused on what he believes matters most: delivering consistently for his club.

“At the end of the day, of course I want to play for the national team and represent my country,” Petersen said.
“But my main responsibility is at Kaizer Chiefs. This is where I work, and this is who pays my salary.”

The goalkeeper stressed that national team selection is ultimately beyond his control.

“The only thing I can control is how I perform at club level,” he added.
“I can’t control the decisions of the national coach. That’s his job.”

While Petersen has chosen not to dwell on selection outcomes, he made it clear that his ambition to wear the Bafana Bafana jersey remains strong.

“Every footballer wants to be part of the national team,” he explained.
“That will always be the goal.”
