Overview

The Groundsman will be responsible for maintaining gardens, lawns and surrounding premises to ensure a clean, safe and well-maintained environment at government facilities. The role includes general garden maintenance, operating horticultural equipment, and ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety standards.

Minimum Requirements

• Minimum Grade 10 / Standard 8 / ABET Level 4
• No experience required
• Knowledge of garden maintenance practices
• Ability to operate horticultural equipment and machinery
• Basic literacy and effective communication skills
• Interpersonal skills
• Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety standards
• For Nelspruit post: Good communication, leadership and organisational skills

Key Responsibilities

Premises Maintenance

• Clean premises and surrounding areas
• Empty dirt bins and remove refuse

Garden Maintenance

• Water gardens
• Prune and trim trees and flowers
• Mow lawns
• Remove weeds and garden waste
• Apply insecticides where necessary
• Remove dead plants and flowers
• Cultivate soil for planting

Equipment & Tools

• Maintain gardening equipment and tools
• Detect and report malfunctioning equipment
• Repair minor defects
• Clean and maintain protective equipment

Health & Safety Compliance

• Ensure adherence to Occupational Health and Safety Act
• Report site challenges
• Ensure proper use of protective clothing
