Overview

Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo invites applications from unemployed South African youth residing within the Johannesburg regions to apply for the Horticultural Learnership Programme 2026.

This opportunity is aimed at young people between the ages of 18 – 35 years who are passionate about environmental care, landscaping, and plant maintenance.

Please note: This is a 12-month learnership programme and does not guarantee permanent employment upon completion.

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 Certificate (Achieved) or NQF Level 4
• Knowledge of Health & Safety in a horticultural environment
• Basic understanding of Soil Science
• Must reside within Johannesburg regions
• Must be unemployed

Training Outputs

1. Plant Care & Maintenance

• Soil preparation and conditioning
• Planting ornamental and herbaceous plants
• Pruning and shaping shrubs and trees
• Applying fertilisers
• Watering and irrigation management

2. Propagation & Cultivation

• Seed and stem propagation
• Use of growth media
• Nursery care and seedling identification

3. Pest & Weed Control

• Manual and chemical weed removal
• Application of herbicides and pesticides

4. Environmental & Safety Standards

• Application of core health and safety principles
• Environmental protection practices

5. Technical & Physical Skills

• Safe use of horticultural machinery and equipment
• Physical fitness for outdoor manual labour
• Basic literacy and communication skills
