Overview

Founded in 1929, TB HIV Care (THC) is an internationally recognised non-profit organisation providing healthcare services across South Africa. The Peer Educator role focuses on outreach to People Who Inject Drugs (PWID), promoting safe practices, distributing harm reduction resources, and linking individuals to essential HIV, TB, and healthcare services. This is a vital position in improving health outcomes and advancing human rights within PWID/PWUD communities.


Key Responsibilities

  • Distribute harm reduction packs and safer sex commodities.
  • Collect used injecting equipment in sharps bins during outreach.
  • Provide accurate health information on:
    • Harm reduction and safe injecting practices
    • HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, TB, Sexual & Reproductive Health (SRH), and human rights
  • Link and refer PWID/PWUD to care:
    • HIV/TB treatment (via mobile nurse, drop-in centre, or nearest facility)
    • HIV testing and PrEP services
  • Promote psychological support and referrals to social services.
  • Recruit PWID/PWUD for Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) and conduct eligibility checks.
  • Identify and support women who inject drugs, including the distribution of dignity packs.

Requirements and Skills

  • Grade 10 qualification.
  • Must be an ex- or current drug user for peer relatability.
  • Minimum of 1 yearโ€™s experience working with PWID/PWUD communities or as a Peer Educator.
  • Ability to read and write clearly in English.
  • Proficiency in isiXhosa, Afrikaans, English, or any other South African language.
  • Clear criminal record.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to build relationships with communities and organisations.
  • Energy, drive, and initiative to see tasks through to completion.
