Purpose of the Position

The Technician: Utilities will assist with monitoring and managing Transnet Property’s utility systems, particularly electrical energy and water utilisation.

The role involves monitoring substations, High Voltage (HV) distribution networks, depots and associated equipment to improve the reliability, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of utility services.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Investigating and auditing electrical installations
• Conducting physical site inspections
• Troubleshooting electrical and utilities-related problems
• Analysing captured meter data
• Supporting accurate monthly utilities billing
• Monitoring electricity and water consumption
• Identifying and reporting utility billing cost factors
• Monitoring utilities billing and cost recovery
• Inspecting workmanship and materials and recommending corrective action
• Ensuring compliance with health and safety requirements
• Auditing energy-saving initiatives
• Maintaining utilities manuals, drawings and technical documentation
• Monitoring preventive, predictive and breakdown maintenance activities
• Developing and maintaining maintenance schedules
• Keeping records of statutory inspections
• Assessing risks associated with non-utility supplier distribution networks
• Analysing Power Factor Correction opportunities to reduce electrical wastage
• Monitoring the performance and availability of electrical distribution networks
• Supporting modifications to existing High Voltage infrastructure
• Participating in OHS Act 85 three-monthly stakeholder meetings
• Contributing to monthly utilities reports
• Providing technical input into strategic utilities projects
• Working with the Project Management Office on utilities-related projects
• Monitoring Life Cycle Asset Management principles and processes
• Supporting the replacement and management of ageing assets

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

• NQF Level 6 National Diploma in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
• At least 3–5 years of relevant post-training electrical/mechanical experience
• Trade Test – Electrical Artisan
• Wireman’s Licence
• Valid Code EB driver’s licence
• Project management capability

Experience involving High Voltage systems and electrical distribution networks is recommended.
