Overview

Tutume District Council invites applications from suitably qualified Botswana Government Employees for the position of Principal Counsel Attorney I.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and advising Council on all legal matters and representing Council in litigation proceedings.

Minimum Qualifications

-Bachelor of Law (LLB)

-Must be admitted as an Attorney of the High Court


Experience

-At least six (6) years of relevant work experience

-Of which two (2) years must have been served as Principal Counsel Attorney II – D3


Main Purpose of the Job

To manage and advise the Council in all legal matters and litigate on its behalf.


Key Duties

-Represent Council in Magistrates’ Court, High Court and Court of Appeal

-Liaise with Botswana Police, Attorney General’s Chambers and government departments

-Advise Council and Accounting Officers on legal matters

-Interpret and manage local and international contracts

-Investigate cases and prepare detailed legal reports

-Review disciplinary cases for legal sufficiency

-Manage service of court documents (summons, subpoenas, eviction orders)

-Formulate and enforce Council policies, bye-laws and statutes

-Supervise and appraise subordinates

-Audit case files and ensure compliance with legal standards

-Undertake related duties as directed by management
