Overview:

The Judiciary Department of Lesotho is seeking four (4) qualified and dedicated individuals to fill the role of Judges’ Clerk. Reporting to the Deputy Registrar, this position offers a unique opportunity for law graduates to support judicial functions by conducting legal research, managing court documentation, and ensuring procedural efficiency within chambers and court proceedings.


Position Purpose:

The Judges’ Clerk plays a vital role in supporting judges by conducting detailed legal research, preparing case files, assisting in courtroom operations, and managing key administrative tasks that facilitate the delivery of justice.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Conduct Legal Research

-Analyze and identify legal issues for cases before the court

-Discuss case matters with the assigned judge

-Conduct in-depth research on legal topics and report findings

-Present relevant case law and legislation to the judge

-Monitor and update the judiciary on legal developments

2. Manage the Judge’s Daily Workload

-Maintain and manage the judge’s diary and schedule

-Verify citations and check drafts of judgments

-Convene court sessions and record judicial instructions

-Secure exhibits and manage court evidence

-Communicate judgment delivery dates to the Registrar

-Assist with pre-trial preparation and meetings

3. Liaise with the Registrar

  • Record court postponements and track:
    • Fresh cases
    • Part-heard cases
    • Reserved judgments
  • Assess performance of court support staff
  • Liaise with the Roll Office on hearing schedules

4. File Management in Chambers

  • Maintain status of:
    • Criminal trials, applications, and reviews
    • Civil trials, applications, and reviews
    • Appeal cases

5. Record Keeping & Efficiency Tasks

  • Ensure the secure and proper movement of court files
  • Deliver complete case files to the Registrar
  • Index and store judgments accurately

6. Prepare Monthly Returns

  • Compile all judgments delivered and submit monthly reports

Requirements:

-Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree

-Strong legal research and analytical skills

-Excellent writing and reporting ability

-High attention to detail and organizational skills

-Ability to integrate knowledge from diverse legal sources

-Ability to work under pressure and beyond normal hours

-Good listening and interpersonal skills
