Introduction

SPAR Group is seeking an experienced and hands-on Maintenance Foreman to lead its workshop and fleet maintenance operations in Nelspruit.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing a team of technicians and contractors to ensure that the companyโ€™s transport fleet, workshop, and facilities operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company standards.

This role requires a qualified Diesel Mechanic with proven leadership ability and strong mechanical and organisational skills.


Key Responsibilities

1. Fleet & Workshop Management

-Lead and supervise the maintenance team to ensure effective vehicle servicing and repairs.

-Oversee the implementation of preventative maintenance programs for the transport fleet.

-Manage mechanical contractors, allocating and monitoring tasks for timely completion.

-Coordinate scheduled and unscheduled repairs, ensuring minimal downtime.

-Conduct on-road support for breakdowns and assist with recovery when required.

-Review and analyse Driver Report Sheets to identify and address recurring issues.

2. Facilities & Stock Control

-Manage workshop administration, inventory control, and ordering of parts.

-Oversee the maintenance of facility infrastructure, ensuring operational readiness.

-Monitor fuel levels and usage, implementing controls to reduce wastage.

-Ensure workshop tools and equipment are properly maintained and accounted for.

3. Safety & Compliance

-Promote and enforce adherence to SPARโ€™s safety policies and relevant regulations.

-Lead safety meetings and conduct investigations of incidents or near misses.

-Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient working environment in line with OHS standards.

-Ensure accurate maintenance records are kept for all vehicles and equipment.

4. Leadership & Communication

Motivate, guide, and evaluate maintenance staff to ensure optimal performance.

-Communicate effectively with internal teams, suppliers, and external service providers.

-Provide technical guidance and develop solutions for complex mechanical faults.

-Handle ad hoc maintenance queries and implement management directives efficiently.


Minimum Requirements

Education:

  • Matric (Grade 12) โ€“ essential
  • Qualified Diesel Mechanic (Trade Test Certificate) โ€“ essential

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 yearsโ€™ experience as a qualified Diesel Mechanic.
  • Previous supervisory experience within a workshop environment โ€“ advantageous.
  • Experience with European vehicles (MAN, Mercedes-Benz) and trailing equipment (BPW, Jost, Thermo King fridges, tail lifts).

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong mechanical, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent leadership and team management ability.
  • Proficient in MS Teams and other computer applications.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Highly organised, with attention to detail and accountability.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, weekends, and public holidays as required.
