Overview

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for 381 Security Officer (Prison Warder) positions at Mangaung Maximum Correctional Centre.

These permanent government posts form part of DCS’s mandate to maintain secure, safe, and humane correctional facilities, while supporting offender rehabilitation and public safety in South Africa.

Security Officers are responsible for maintaining discipline, enforcing security procedures, supervising inmates, and ensuring the protection of staff, offenders, visitors, and state property.

Appointments will be made at the following competency levels:

• CB1-1 (Entry Level)
• CB1-2
• CB1-3

Placement level will depend on qualifications and years of relevant experience.

Salary

• CB1-1: R212 358 per annum
• CB1-2: R257 895 per annum
• CB1-3: R313 521 per annum

---

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 / Matric
• Completion of Correctional Science Learnership, Basic Training or Induction Training Course (ITC)
• CB1-1: No previous experience required
• CB1-2: Minimum 10 years’ relevant experience at CB1-1 level
• CB1-3: Minimum 10 years’ relevant experience at CB1-2 level
• Computer literacy
• Firearm competency
• Knowledge of correctional legislation and policies
• Knowledge of Minimum Security Standards
• Strong communication and report-writing skills

Key Responsibilities

• Perform access control at correctional facilities
• Supervise inmate movement within and outside facilities
• Guard inmates at public institutions and during transfers
• Conduct physical security inspections
• Operate and monitor security control rooms
• Manage security equipment and stores
• Ensure safe custody, care, and control of offenders
• Support offender rehabilitation initiatives
• Maintain a secure and humane detention environment
