Overview
Transnet Freight Rail is recruiting a Trainee Train Assistant in Halfweg. This railway trainee opportunity is ideal for candidates seeking a career in rail operations, locomotive handling and freight logistics.
The successful candidate will assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient handling of various types of trains including airbrake, vacuum, heavy haul, high-speed and passenger trains. The goal is to ensure cargo reaches its destination safely, on time and without damage.
Position Purpose
To support the Train Driver in the safe movement, preparation and handling of locomotives and trains in accordance with railway safety standards, operational procedures and customer service commitments.
Key Responsibilities
Train & Locomotive Preparation
-Sign on duty and receive shift allocation
-Prepare and inspect locomotives
-Assist with locomotive brake tests
-Clean and organise working areas
-Check and supplement required equipment
-Couple and dispatch locomotives
Pre-Trip Inspections
-Perform pre-trip locomotive and train inspections
-Attach and detach vehicles as per works orders
-Mount telemeters and train indicators
-Complete vehicle lists and vacuum forms
-Conduct brake tests with the Train Driver
Shunting & Yard Operations
-Perform shunting operations in sidings
-Place and remove trucks as required
-Update vehicle lists
-Ensure compliance with train working rules
Enroute Assistance
-Compare signal positions with Train Driver
-Observe safe train movement
-Reset locomotive trip-outs
-Protect train during incidents
-Assist during emergencies
Administration
-Complete train journals
-Submit documentation to Section Manager
-Provide accurate feedback on route incidents
Minimum Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science
Age & Physical Requirements
- Must be 21 years or older (as per SANS 3000 regulations)
- Minimum height: 1.6 metres
- Physically fit (hearing, vision, mental and physical fitness verified through medical tests)
- Able to carry heavy objects
Psychometric & Medical
- Psychomotor ability assessed via Vienna Testing System (VTS)
- Must undergo safety behavioural risk assessments
- Willing to undergo periodic medical surveillance
Functional Training
- Must successfully complete theoretical and practical Train Assistant training
- Must obtain certification to work independently as a Train Assistant
