Overview

The City of Tshwane is looking for 4 Artisan Assistants to support Water and Sanitation operations in Pretoria Central and Region 1.

For the Pretoria Central positions, successful candidates will assist qualified artisans with preventative maintenance and general operational work on bulk water infrastructure.

The role involves practical and physically demanding duties such as handling tools and equipment, digging trenches, assisting with valves and pipelines, cleaning reservoirs, loading materials and supporting general maintenance activities.

This opportunity may suit candidates with basic literacy, good physical fitness and an interest in practical water and sanitation maintenance work.

Key Responsibilities

Depending on the assigned work area, Artisan Assistants may be responsible for:

– Assisting qualified artisans with preventative and routine maintenance.

– Handling tools and equipment required for maintenance work.

– Digging and backfilling trenches.

– Following prescribed safety procedures when carrying out excavation work.

– Assisting plumbers and other artisans with maintenance of water infrastructure.

– Loading and off-loading tools, materials and equipment.

– Cleaning work areas after completing assigned tasks.

– Cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment.

– Assisting with general operational and maintenance activities.

– Following instructions from artisans, supervisors and team leaders.

– Supporting the team during planned and emergency maintenance work.

– Complying with workplace health and safety requirements.

Duties for Bulk Water Supply Positions

For the Johannes Ramokhoase Street positions, duties include:

• Assisting artisan plumbers with opening and closing reservoir gates and lids.
• Assisting with isolation of shut-off valves at reservoirs and bulk supply pipelines.
• Loosening and tightening bolts and nuts when components are replaced.
• Assisting with stripping and cleaning components such as dirt boxes and control valves.
• Helping measure reservoir water levels.
• Assisting with adjustments to control valves.
• Washing and cleaning reservoirs.
• Supporting general maintenance of bulk water infrastructure.
• Loading and off-loading materials and maintenance equipment.
• Cleaning vehicles, tools and equipment.
• Keeping work areas clean after maintenance tasks.
• Taking responsibility for certain team duties when the artisan or supervisor is unavailable, where required.

Minimum Requirements

For the Pretoria Central Artisan Assistant positions, applicants should have:

• Basic literacy.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work.
• Good physical fitness and general health.
• Ability to carry out operational and maintenance work for continuous periods.
• Ability to understand and follow instructions.
• Willingness and ability to work shifts.
• Willingness to work overtime.
• Willingness to perform standby duties.

Relevant experience in a water, plumbing, maintenance or municipal environment will be an added advantage.

Salary Scale: R180,864 – R217,740 per annum

Estimated Total Remuneration Package: R262,140 – R309,076 per annum

The remuneration applicable to the Region 1 positions should be confirmed in the individual vacancy advertisement.
