Overview

The Gauteng Department of Education is recruiting 277 Examination Assistants to support the Examinations Management Directorate during the 2026 examination period.

Opportunities are available at the Department’s Head Office and various examination district offices across Gauteng. Successful candidates will assist with receiving, checking, controlling, scanning, packing, dispatching and archiving examination scripts.

The positions are particularly suitable for registered tertiary students, unemployed people with tertiary qualifications and unemployed graduates who meet the academic requirements.

The work involves strict examination procedures and tight deadlines, so applicants must be accurate, numerically competent and capable of working under pressure.

Key Responsibilities

Successful Examination Assistants may be responsible for:

– Receiving examination scripts daily.

– Checking, controlling, scanning and packing scripts for marking.

– Ensuring scripts are correctly indexed and archived after marking.

– Checking that the correct number of scripts and marksheets are received for each batch.

– Verifying scripts according to subject, examination paper and examination session.

– Identifying and addressing discrepancies relating to scripts, batches and marksheets.

– Ensuring examination scripts are prepared for the correct marking venue.

– Checking that each bag of scripts contains two copies of the MP Flow control list.

– Ensuring script bags are correctly tagged with the appropriate colour-coded marking venue label.

– Creating marking-centre files for scripts being dispatched to each marking venue.

– Assisting with the dispatch of examination scripts to marking venues.

– Receiving and controlling marked examination scripts.

– Archiving marked scripts at Head Office.

– Ensuring archived scripts can be easily retrieved when required.

– Following examination administration and document-control procedures.

– Completing allocated duties accurately within strict deadlines.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have an appropriate recognised academic qualification, such as:

  • Senior Certificate; or
  • National Senior Certificate; or
  • National Senior Certificate Vocational (NCV).

Applications are specifically open to:

  • Registered students at tertiary institutions.
  • Unemployed persons with one or more tertiary qualifications.
  • Unemployed graduates.

Applicants must also possess advanced numerical skills, with Mathematics or Accounting as a compulsory subject.

Candidates who are in their second year or above at a tertiary institution will have an advantage.

Experience

Previous experience in examination administration should be clearly indicated on the application.

Experience as an Examination Assistant, whether at a Marking Centre or in an office-based examination environment, will be beneficial.

Applicants will be asked to indicate how many years of experience they have as an Examination Assistant or Quality Assurer.

Who May Not Apply

The Department specifically states that the following individuals may not apply and will not be considered:

  • Persons writing the National Senior Certificate examinations in 2026.
  • Persons writing the Senior Certificate examinations in 2026.
  • Persons writing AET examinations in 2026.
  • Persons who have taken the VSP.
  • Persons who are currently employed elsewhere.

  • Whether they have passed Matric or an equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification.
  • Whether they are currently registered as tertiary students.

  • Whether they passed Accounting at Matric or tertiary level.
  • Their previous experience as an Examination Assistant or Quality Assurer.
