Overview

Transnet Freight Rail is recruiting a Trainee Train Assistant to support train operations and assist Train Drivers in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of freight and passenger trains.

As a Trainee Train Assistant, you will gain both theoretical and practical experience, preparing you to work independently in one of South Africa’s key transport sectors.

Minimum Requirements

-Grade 12 with Mathematics and/or Physical Science

-Must be 21 years or older

-Must be at least 1.6m tall

-Physically and medically fit (hearing, vision, mental fitness)

-Ability to carry heavy objects

Training & Development

-Must successfully complete theoretical and practical training

-Will be required to obtain Train Assistant certification

-Ongoing medical and safety assessments will be conducted

Key Responsibilities

-Assist Train Driver with safe operation of locomotives and trains

-Prepare locomotives before departure (equipment checks, cleaning, setup)

-Conduct brake tests and pre-trip inspections

-Perform shunting activities in yards and sidings

-Assist with coupling and uncoupling of wagons

-Monitor signals and communicate with Train Driver

-Ensure safe movement of trains during journeys

-Assist during emergencies and incidents

-Complete administrative duties such as train journals
