About the Role

As a General Worker, you will support the daily operations of the railway workshop by assisting artisans and technicians, maintaining a clean and safe working environment, handling materials and preparing equipment for maintenance activities.

The successful candidate will play an important role in ensuring workshop operations run efficiently while complying with railway safety standards and company procedures.


Key Responsibilities

Workshop Support

The successful candidate will:

-Perform housekeeping duties throughout the workshop.

-Clean work areas, equipment, pits and workshop floors.

-Assist artisans, technicians and fitters with maintenance and repair work.

-Prepare workstations, tools and equipment before maintenance activities.

-Clean and service railway components and workshop equipment.

Material Handling

-Load, unload and move tools, materials and spare parts.

-Store workshop materials correctly.

-Assist with lifting and moving heavy components using approved lifting equipment.

-Support stock receiving, issuing and handling activities.

Equipment Operation

-Operate basic hand tools safely.

-Use workshop equipment according to company procedures.

-Remove scrap materials and dispose of waste correctly.

Safety and Compliance

-Conduct routine inspections of work areas.

-Report hazards, defects and unsafe conditions immediately.

-Follow workplace health, safety and environmental regulations.

-Wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.

-Participate in planned maintenance shutdowns and emergency repairs.

-Perform additional duties assigned by the Workshop Supervisor.


Minimum Requirements

Education

Applicants must have:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) or an equivalent qualification.
  • A relevant technical qualification will be an advantage.

Experience

Applicants should have:

  • 1โ€“2 years’ experience in an industrial, engineering, manufacturing or railway workshop environment.
  • Experience working with heavy machinery or railway equipment (advantageous).
  • Experience using hand tools and power tools.

Knowledge

Candidates should have knowledge of:

  • Basic workshop operations.
  • Workplace health and safety regulations.
  • Industrial housekeeping standards.
  • Manual handling techniques.
  • Railway workshop practices (advantageous).
