Overview

The University of the Free State (UFS) is inviting applications for a Sport Grounds General Worker within the Facilities Management Division. The successful candidate will assist in maintaining sports fields, gardens, and outdoor facilities to ensure they remain safe, clean, and well-maintained for students, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

– Clean and maintain assigned sports grounds and surrounding areas.

– Pick up and dispose of litter to maintain a clean environment.

– Monitor cleaning supplies and request replacements when necessary.

– Operate gardening and grounds maintenance equipment, including brush cutters, blowers, lawn mowers, precision cutters, and other hand and power tools.

– Perform irrigation maintenance and repairs when required.

– Mark sports fields for sporting events and activities.

– Mow lawns, trim trees, rake leaves, and maintain athletic fields.

– Assist with general maintenance duties across the campus.

– Operate a motor vehicle or tractor to transport equipment and materials when required.

– Apply fertilisers and pesticides according to approved procedures.

– Inspect and maintain tools and equipment to ensure they remain in good working condition.

– Follow all occupational health, safety, and environmental procedures.

– Attend team meetings and perform additional duties assigned by supervisors.

Requirements

  • Grade 10 (NQF Level 2).
  • Relevant experience performing grounds maintenance or similar duties.
  • Valid Code EB/B driver’s licence.
  • Physically fit and able to lift and move heavy equipment.

Recommendations

  • Minimum one year’s experience in sports grounds or gardening maintenance.
  • Experience operating gardening machinery and equipment.
  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety procedures.
