Gold Fields South Deep Gold Mine is offering a Learner Miner Learnership Programme for aspiring mining professionals from its designated Host Communities.

The programme provides formal training and practical work-based experience to help learners develop the skills needed to pursue a career in the mining industry.

Who Can Apply?

The opportunity is aimed at employees and prospective applicants from South Deep’s Host Communities.

To qualify as a Host Community applicant, you must either:

  • Live in Bekkersdaal, Zuurberkom, Thusanang, Hillshaven, Westonaria, Poortjie, Simunye, Kalbasfontein or Jachtfontein; OR
  • Have successfully completed Grade 12/Matric at a school located within one of these communities.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) or equivalent N3 qualification with two languages passed
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a mining operation
  • Ability to meet the required medical fitness standards
  • Ability to pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test and any other required assessments

What the Programme Offers

Successful learners will receive practical and technical training designed to prepare them for work in the mining environment.

Learners will be expected to:

  • Complete technical training prescribed by the MQA/DMRE.
  • Maintain satisfactory performance during technical evaluations.
  • Follow all mine health and safety requirements.
  • Participate in workplace risk assessments.
  • Work alongside and assist artisans.
  • Handle, clean and safely store tools.
  • Maintain good housekeeping in workshops and work areas.
  • Report hazards and unsafe conditions.
  • Participate in standby duties when required.
  • Take responsibility for their own learning and career development.
