Overview
Transnet is recruiting a Trainee Train Assistant for its Freight Rail division in Belfast.
This opportunity is ideal for physically fit and safety-conscious candidates who are interested in building a career within the railway and freight transport industry.
Successful candidates will assist Train Drivers with locomotive preparation, train operations, shunting activities, communication systems, safety procedures, and operational support to ensure safe and efficient rail transportation.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 with:
- Pure Mathematics and/or
- Physical Science
Additional Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be medically fit
- Pass safety behavioural risk assessments
- Have good hearing, eyesight, and physical fitness
- Be prepared to undergo periodic medical surveillance
- Be willing to work shifts
- Be capable of carrying heavy objects
- Be at least 1.6m tall
- Have psychomotor ability (Vienna Testing System assessment)
โ ๏ธ Applicants younger than 21 years may not perform Train Driver or Train Control duties in line with SANS regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Train & Locomotive Preparation
-Prepare locomotives before departure
-Conduct locomotive brake tests
-Assist with locomotive startup procedures
-Clean work areas and locomotive sections
Train Operations & Shunting
-Assist with shunting activities
-Attach and detach rail vehicles
-Conduct train inspections and brake testing
-Place and remove rail trucks in sidings
Safety & Communication
-Prepare and test communication equipment
-Observe train signals and route safety
-Assist during incidents and emergencies
-Ensure compliance with train working rules and safety standards
Administrative Duties
- Complete train journals and reports
- Submit shift documentation accurately
- Provide operational feedback to Train Drivers
