About the Transnet WIL Plumber Programme

Transnet’s Work Integrated Learning programme is designed to provide recently qualified apprentices who have completed their trade test with practical workplace experience.

Over the 24-month training period, participants will have an opportunity to apply their vocational and practical knowledge in a real working environment.

The programme provides hands-on training, mentorship and exposure to industry-related tasks intended to improve participants’ workplace experience and employability.

Important: This opportunity is for candidates who are already qualified/trade-tested plumbers. It is not a plumbing apprenticeship for applicants who only have Grade 12.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a Plumber Trade Test Certificate / Red Seal.
  • Have completed the trade test within the past four years.
  • Be between 18 and 35 years old.
  • Have less than one year of work experience.
  • Be a South African citizen.

The vacancy information provided does not list Grade 12 alone as sufficient. The Plumber Trade Test Certificate is specifically required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Successful learners will gain practical experience while performing tasks such as:

  • Carrying out routine plumbing maintenance.
  • Performing repairs.
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting plumbing-related problems.
  • Following applicable safety procedures and regulations.
  • Keeping tools and equipment in good working condition.
  • Documenting work that has been completed.
  • Reporting completed work and relevant issues to supervisors.

Competencies

Transnet describes the expected competency development at different levels:

Beginner: Basic understanding of tools and safety procedures.

Intermediate: Ability to perform tasks independently with minimal supervision.

Advanced: Higher-level technical skills, including the ability to supervise and train others.

Employment Equity

Transnet states that preference will be given to suitably qualified applicants from designated groups, in line with the Employment Equity Plan and targets of the organisation and operating division.
